A Simple Guide to Cleaning & Maintaining Your NBR Yoga Mat

Proper care is essential for the hygiene and longevity of your NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) yoga mat. Due to its thick, porous, and soft nature, it requires a gentle but consistent cleaning routine.

1. Regular Cleaning After Each Use
This is the most important step to prevent the buildup of sweat, oils, and dirt.

What to Use: A simple DIY solution works best.
Mix 1 part white vinegar or witch hazel with 4 parts water in a spray bottle.
For a ready-made option, use a commercial yoga mat cleaner that is alcohol-free and specifically designed for gentle cleaning.
What to Avoid: Do not use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. Avoid essential oils as they can break down the NBR material over time.
Method:
Take your mat outside or hang it over a chair.
Lightly mist the surface with your cleaning solution. Do not oversaturate.
Wipe the entire surface gently with a soft, damp cloth or microfiber towel.
Allow it to air dry completely before rolling it up for storage.

2. Deep Cleaning (Occasionally)
If your mat starts to develop an odor or needs a more thorough clean, give it a deep clean.

Method:
Lay the mat flat in a bathtub or on a clean, non-abrasive outdoor surface.
Use a soft cloth or sponge dipped in a mild solution of warm water and a few drops of gentle, non-detergent soap (like Dr. Bronner's unscented baby soap).
Gently wipe down the entire mat. Never submerge an NBR mat completely in water or put it in a washing machine, as the porous material will absorb water, leading to mold and mildew inside the layers.

3. Drying Your Mat Properly
Proper drying is crucial to prevent mold and mildew.

Air Dry Flat: The best way to dry your NBR mat is to lay it flat on a clean surface.
Hang with Caution: You can hang it over a railing or clothesline, but be aware that its weight may cause it to stretch or deform over time. Avoid hanging it by a single clip, which can create a permanent crease.
Location: Dry it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources (like radiators). Prolonged sun exposure and high heat can cause the NBR material to break down, become brittle, and lose its cushioning.

4. Storage
Roll It Up: Once the mat is completely dry, roll it up with the practice side (the side you stand on) facing out. This helps the mat lay flat during your next practice.
Store Properly: Keep it in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in the trunk of a hot car or a damp basement.
