According to US reports, a new large-scale study on exercise and death conducted by Iowa State University, the University of South Carolina and Pennington Biomedical Center in Louisiana shows that just 5 minutes of running a day can greatly reduce people's risk of premature death.

The data for this latest study came from a vast database of data from the Cooper Clinic in Dallas and its research institutes. From this database, the researchers selected more than 55,000 healthy volunteers, ages 18 to 100, who had visited the clinic at least 15 years ago. Of this group, 24 percent reported running, though their usual distance and pace varied widely. The researchers then looked at the death records of the adults. During the 15-year follow-up period, nearly 3,500 people died, many of them from heart disease.

The results, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, showed that runners were far less likely to develop the disease than non-runners. Even after the researchers accounted for being overweight or smoking, runners had a 30 percent lower overall risk of death than non-runners, and a 45 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease. Even overweight runners who smoked had a lower risk of early death than non-runners, regardless of their weight or smoking habits. Overall, runners lived about three years longer than people who never ran. It is worth noting that whether people run for a long time or a short time, it can bring different degrees of benefit.
